How Playing a harmonica saved a man's life I was surfing around the internet the other evening and came across a story about how a suicidal man's life was saved by a simple song played on a harmonica. The account goes like this: A man was threatening to commit suicide in his home and so his wife called the police. When the police arrived, the man became very agitated and the situation was escalated as the police and the suicidal man (we'll call him Jim) began yelling at each other. The police wanted to remove Jim from the house and take him to the hospital but Jim didn't want any part of that scenario. A short time later, the ambulance crew arrived on the scene and witnessed the quickly unraveling situation and while the one ambulance driver understandably decided to let the police deal with the situation, his partner who like to play the harmonica in idle moments decided to take a harmonica out of his pocket and began to play the old song "Oh Susanna". This stopped both Jim and the police in their tracks. It distracted both of them to the point where Jim began to focus on the music instead of his wanting to die. The situation was resolved peacefully by Jim calmly climbing into the ambulance and riding to the hospital. What a great story! So you see, it is a very human and personal form of music because it reflects where we are in our lives whether we are feeling down and out or happy and content.
